He was the first child of a Navy submarine captain and an Army nurse who had met during World War II in the South Pacific. During the next twenty years, Art moved from Honolulu to Annapolis, Maryland from Maryland to San Diego, California, from San Diego back to Hawaii, from Hawaii to Newport, Rhode Island, from Rhode Island to Coronado, California, from California to Arlington, Virginia, back to Coronado and finally to Santa Barbara where he attended UCSB. Along the way he attended 9 schools and met many new friends. Moving every other year or so was fun although saying goodbye to best friends was always hard. Returning to Coronado for his junior and senior years of high school was a wonderful homecoming. Many of his old friends were still in town and escaping the heat and humidity of Washington, D.C. summers to return to the sand and surf of Southern California was joyous. It might be an exaggeration to say that Art received a hero's welcome when he returned, but this is how he saw things.
